Four steps of progress for international students

STEP1|The skills to live in Japan

Learning everyday language and practical conversation from roleplays involving scenarios students will likely encounter in their daily life and interacting with Japanese people of different generations will also help you develop the skills to survive, and enjoy your life in Japan.

Conversation tests to improve communication skills

Each student will have a five-minute, one-on-one conversation with the teacher to confirm how much they have mastered the Japanese they learned in class. Conversation is the most effective way to learn a language. This will help you develop your communication skills.

Practical activities, for the skills to make use of what you learn

In ECC classes, at the end of each section they study, we make sure to confirm that students can make use of what they have learned. You will actually shop at a store, hold a party, or invite Japanese guests to interact with you. y building up the students' confidence in various situations, they will steadily build up aptitudes and things they feel confident doing.

Cultivate the skills to build up the students' ability to think logically in Japanese, and communicate their opinions at the GEA(Global Education Awards)

The GEA is a presentation contest for all Yamaguchi Gakuen students to present their experiences and achievements in Global Education.* Participants make a presentation about how they could contribute to the global society in Japanese, talk about their personal growth, and the ideas they have gained through their own experiences.
*English education, Japanese language education, volunteer activities, language and international exchange programs, and study abroad programs.

The speech competition lets students have fun while speaking their mind

Once a year, one representative from each class is chosen to give a speech on a topic they want to share with everyone. On the day of the contest, the entire class comes together to cheer on the speaker and make the event a great success. This is also an opportunity for the representatives to demonstrate the results of their daily studies. It’s a big event on campus!
About 500 current students cheer on their class representatives

STEP2|Acquiring communication skills

You can learn real Japanese expressions by interacting with Japanese students and other Japanese people of different ages and from different communities. Through various kinds of communication, you will naturally be able to have meaningful conversations.

Interacting with Japanese students to enhance your human skills

You will be able to interact with Japanese students who attend Yamaguchi Gakuen*. Experience conversation with real Japanese people of a similar age, and expand your range of colloquial expressions through social events and so on. You’ll make more friends and grow as a person.(*ECC KOKUSAI COLLEGE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES, ECC COLLEGE OF COMPUTER & MULTIMEDIA, and ECC COLLEGE OF BEAUTY AND STYLE)

Practical training for interacting with local people outside the classroom

This is a work project where students go to department stores and mass-market retailers and make classroom presentations on their interactions with store clerks as well as reports on their participation in local events. Depending on the purpose and situation, we check whether students are able to convey what they want to say and whether they are able to use a variety of expressions. This gives students a feeling that they are learning effectively.

A speech competition to express your own thinking

The International Speech Contest in Japanese is held every year to promote study and exchange among international students and to improve Japanese language education. Students are able to demonstrate the debating skills they have developed in class. Some of our students have won awards for excellence at the national competition!

STEP3|Cultivate the skills needed to be an international person

Acknowledging and accepting diversity is an important part of entering sciety. We hope you'll anticipate the changes that will occur in you in a multicultural society.

Buddy Program to develop global skills

What is the Buddy Program?
Held twice a day, the Buddy Program is a very popular program at ECC. One of our greatest strengths is the possibility to interact every day with the 2,800 Japanese students who attend Yamaguchi Gakuen. International students from all over the world and Japanese students talk to each other and discuss various topics in Japanese to deepen their cultural understanding.

What you will experience in the Buddy Program.
Talking with Japanese people of a similar age lets you experience real Japanese language, culture, and ways of thinking, which will dramatically improve your Japanese language skills. Also, by learning about the cultures and customs of countries around the world, you will be able to broaden your own sense of values and perspective.

Learning by experiencing Japanese culture

ECC has many events where international students and Japanese students can experience traditional Japanese culture together. You will gain a better understanding of Japan.

STEP4|Actively pursue the career path you hope for

ECC lets you choose from among various career paths, such as continuing your studies in one of ECC’s colleges or going on to higher education and finding a job. Students can acquire specialized skills for each career path.

JLPT and EJU preparation for further study and work in Japan

We thoroughly prepare students according to their own Japanese language level for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), which is necessary to enter a vocational school or find a job in Japan, and for the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), which is required for students who wish to enter a university.

Regular tests to check your level of achievement

Daily quizzes and tests two to three times a week will help you get into the habit of reviewing and asesssing your current abilities in detail. When you can see your test scores improve, it will boost your motivation to study.

ECC’s study supports the highest level of learning

Homeroom teacher system, Always close to students

Homeroom teachers and students work together to guide the students through their studies and daily lives until graduation. The homeroom teacher is sometimes strict and sometimes kind, and warmly provides support to each student as if they were family.

Career guidance, Meticulous and thorough

Career guidance teachers listen to the wishes of the international students and provide appropriate advice on a one-on-one basis (all students can receive guidance on EJU preparation and school choices). ECC has built up a wealth of know-how in guiding international students to pass the entrance examinations of many difficult-to-enter universities and graduate schools, and learners can access detailed reports on the success of other graduates. ECC also regularly provides guidance on school choices to support its students.

Textbooks to learn useful Japanese.Dekiru Nihongo textbooks

These textbooks are designed to help students acquire the skills to convey information about themselves and their thoughts, and Japanese language skills for communication and discussion. They cultivate the ability to learn independently to achieve the goals of each section.

Message from the author of the textbook

ECC places great importance on practical Japanese language skills, and has adopted Dekiru Nihongo out of the teachers’ passion to provide fun, high-quality classes. ECC is a school that never stops improving itself.

A staggering amount of study time. 900 periods of classes

One of the advantages of ECC is that we provide a total of 900 periods of classes per year. According to the Immigration Services Agency’s notification criteria for Japanese language education institutions, there must be at least 760 periods of instruction, but ECC far exceeds this with 900 periods.
